“Haiti is the poorest country in the Western hemisphere, and one of the most disadvantaged countries in the developing world. Seventy-six percent of Haitians live on less than US $2 per day, while 55 percent live on less than US $1 per day.

”Food supply covers only 55 percent of the population and daily food insecurity affects 40 percent of Haitian homes. Some 2.4 million Haitians cannot afford the minimum 2,240 daily calories recommended by the World Health Organization. Extreme poverty, combined with political, social and economic instability and recurrent natural disasters have exacerbated vulnerability to food insecurity for large sectors of the population in Haiti. Young children, pregnant mothers and lactating women are at particular risk.’ says the United Nation’s WFP World Food Programme in its Food Security Overview, Haiti web site.

Distribution Center Currently we are daily feeding over 20,000 school children in the rural southern region of Jeremie, Haiti a nourishing hot school lunch. To build on this program foundation we we request $135,000 funding to reimburse shipment of 24 - 40’ containers to Haiti; approximately one every month, over the covered 2 year funding cycle and 1 shipment of a truck filled with Federal surplus. We propose to ship donated household yard sale goods including used clothes, shoes, as well as corporate donations. Each container would have an overseas value of over $40,000. We also desire to ship Federal surplus to be used for our overseas office, program materials and vehicles.

Through our Project of Self Help and Economic Development unemployed parents in Jeremie, Haiti can start a small business and earn a living. This empowers more parents in this rural region to pay school tuition, buy uniforms, books, etc. to send their children to school. This will 1. ensure the economic viability and sustainability of these rural schools, 2. improve the quality of teachers, and 3. keep children at home with their family.

We want to eliminate  child domestic slavery by taking the economic pressure off parents so they don‘t feel compelled to place their children in an orphanage, or the home of  a richer family hoping their child will be treated well by their wealthy host, be fed and receive schooling. In may cases these children away from the love and protection of their parents, become domestic slaves, doing domestic chores for their host instead of school work.

By providing this small business opportunity, the economic impact to this community could be great. The average per capita income is about $1.00 per day. We have the potential to double a families income. Just imagine what this increased income could do for a family and  would do to the overall economic community.

school childrenBy offering quality schooling opportunities and offering economic prosperity, this would eliminate the motivation for heads of households and students  to move to Port-Au-Prince in search of a better opportunities. Strengthening the rural community also helps in Port-Au-Prince: to relieve the pressures of over crowding, the growth of slums, the resultant kidnappings and violence.
